Our Religious Education Curriculum
- Our RE teaching has its roots in our British values of tolerance and mutual respect;
-
We want the children to understand the key teachings of the major faiths, and to consider the impact of faith on people’s lives both at a personal level and in the global context, and to understand some of the geopolitical realities of the latter;
-
We follow the Newham SACRE curriculum;
-
In Interfaith Week each class visits a place of worship and we invite our local faith leaders in to school to describe and explain aspects of their faith and customs;
-
Our aim is to support the children to identify common themes in different faiths, and to appreciate and celebrate the co-existence, acceptance and tolerance of all faiths at our school and in our local community.
Covid adaptations to our RE curriculum: We have moved to an interim RE curriculum to accommodate the reduced teaching time in school, still based on the Newham SACRE curriculum. The themes and sequencing of the units is designed to ensure that pupils become familiar with the key concepts and customs of each of the six major religions. In addition in Years 5 and 6 there are units that have direct links to history units. This year we have also had to amend the work we do in Interfaith Week as we cannot visit local places of worship or invite local faith leaders to our school. Instead, this year, we introduced the 'Inter-Faith Buddy Project', where children in each class interviewed a pupil in their class, who had a different faith to them and then prepared and uploaded an oral presentation about what they found out.
